The Makeup Station

Hey Everyone, I get asked so often about my makeup room and unit I thought you might like to know a bit more about where I got it and all the details. What can I say…..my makeup room is my happy place. It’s where you’ll find me most of the time. I sit in front of my makeup unit to relax the way people would sit in front of the tv to relax. It’s my haven and my pride and joy. My makeup unit is from Ikea. I had been eyeing it up for a while when himself suggested we go to Ikea and have a look around my birthday last year…..I didn’t need to be asked twice I tell ya!! My unit is made up of a few different pieces. I picked this combo of pieces as it fits my space perfectly and gives me loads of storage. There’s literally hundreds of different furniture combinations for makeup units/dressing tables in Ikea so you’re sure to find one to fit your space and more importantly budget!!

So now the details…

The two tall 9 drawer units are from the ALEX range. They each have 5 shallow drawers and 4 deep ones. Between the two units I can fit my entire kit into them with room to spare!! I also have room for all my hair products, nail products and paperwork and boring stuff.

The tabletop is the LINNMON table and I just have two legs on it at the back. Then I attached it to the drawers at the front with shelf brackets.

The 2 drawer shelf on top of the desk is the EKBY ALEX. This is where I keep all my disposables that I use during makeups. All my tissues, cotton buds, wipes etc. all fit perfectly and are easy to get to while still looking nice and tidy.

My mirror is the STAVE 70cm x 70cm and I have 3 sets of LEDSJO wall lamps attached to the sides. These are quite pricey at €50 a pop without bulbs!! But for me they are the most important part of the whole unit. They really are super bright though so 2 sets would probably be enough lighting for makeup.

All the units come flat-packed so be prepared for a bit of work getting them all assembled. My very patient other half got roped into “helping” (he did the whole lot!!). Also it can pricey to have your purchases delivered from Ikea so it’s a good idea to think ahead for getting your bits home. I let down the backseat in my car and had just about enough room to fit them in. Phew!!

I’ll leave a couple of links below to some of the pieces so you can have a browse and pick your dream combo for your happy place 🙂

Until next time,

Live Pretty,

Lisa M xx

Back to School 5 Minute Makeup

image

Where oh where did that summer go? It feels like just yesterday we were settling into the longer evenings and feeling optimistic about getting some sunny weather. And next thing you know it’s the last week in August and we have to turn our thoughts back to early mornings and school runs. It’s not all bad though…. We’re here to ease you back into routine with a guide to a nice easy 5 minute makeup look perfect for those busy mornings.

When you’ve just rolled out of bed and need to get out the door pronto, the last thing you need is to be juggling 20 different products. So stick to the basics. 5 basic products applied correctly will always look better than 10 fancy products just lashed on in a rush.

So for starters……foundation. Opt for something easy to work with and quick to apply. L’Oreal True Match is a fantastic foundation. It has a lovely formula that glides on easily with a medium buildable coverage. Apply with a brush starting at the centre of the face blending outwards. If you prefer more coverage add a little extra just on the areas you need it. This will keep your coverage adequate but not too heavy for work or school. Use a small touch of loose powder to set if you tend to get the dreaded shine on the tzone.

image

Next up…a quick sweep of blush. There’s no quicker way to liven up a tired complexion in the morning. For perfect blush placement smile and apply to the apples of the cheeks, always sweeping up and back. This will add lift to the face. Live Pink by Rimmel is a perfect go-to shade for a natural pop of colour. If you happen to go a bit Aunt Sally with the blusher just buff it in with your foundation brush to take down some of the colour.

image

Brows are next. While we do love a good brow, they should frame the face and not totally take over. A brow powder applied with an angle brush will give good definition without the bluntness you can sometimes get with a pencil. You will also have more control with a brush. Use the straight edge of the brush to draw on a straight line at the bottom of your brow from the start up to the arch. Then draw through the arch and down to a fine tapered finish. Then flip your brush around and use the flat side to fill in the rest of the brow making sure to fill in any gaps in the natural brow. The Catrice Eyebrow Set is a handy little kit, it has 2 brow powders and a mini tweezers and angle brush…all your brow needs in one cute tiny package!!

image

Then on to eyes. Cutcrease, smokey, cateye….we love it all. But seriously….who has the time or patience at stupid o’clock in the morning?? What you want is one easy to blend colour that packs a punch and lasts all day. Maybelline are on the ball with this one with their Colour Tattoo cream shadows. These are a fantastic dupe of Mac’s Paintpots. On and On Bronze is our favourite. A metallic taupe colour that when blended out is super flattering and very wearable. The best way to apply this is with a round fluffy brush. Start on the lid and buff upwards into the crease and blend until there are no harsh lines. This on its own is enough to make your eyes pop, but if you can’t go without eyeliner, a quick smudge of dark brown kohl pencil works beautifully with this product.

image

And finally….mascara. We’re long-term fans of Maybelline Great Lash mascara here at LisasLivinPretty. We’ve tried loads of others that while they were good, they just didn’t quite compare to Great Lash. It’s such a bargain and it now a cult classic among makeup artists. If you tend to get the old panda eye effect mid-afternoon go for the waterproof version, that stuff’s not going anywhere!!

image

And voila….just add a slick of your favourite lipgloss and you’re transformed from bedhead to gorgeous in 5 minutes flat. Now if you do have a couple more minutes to spare, the Sleek Face Form palette will amp up your look in a flash. Use the contour shade with a soft fluffy brush to lightly shade along under the cheekbone to create more depth in that hollow. Follow with the highlighter shade along the top of the cheekbone, browbone, cupids bow and nose. Just a little extra step if you’re feelin’ fancy!!

We hope you liked our guide and took some tips from it. If there’s anything else you want to know about any products or techniques mentioned just ask!!

Snapchat Newbie!

image

Hi Everyone!

Snapchat has become my weakest link. I am an absolute #snapchataddict. There I said it… (phew that was hard)!! This app is beyond entertaining. It’s like stalking (on the nicest level of course) your favourite celebrity. For me though, my favourites are our very own Irish bloggers, beauty bloggers, makeup artists or just really cool people! You get a glimpse into someone else’s (not always perfect)  life, which probably sounds very creepy. But let’s face it, who doesn’t want to know what Pippa O’Connor or Kylie Jenner are up to? Please don’t say it’s just me….? It has completely overtaken all my other social media accounts, I just can’t stop nor do I want to.

It absolutely cracks me up, full of laugh out loud moments, honest opinions and a few rants that have become quite enjoyable to listen to! I have lots of favourites that I’m totally obsessed with. These people have become my inspiration to start blogging and motivation for various reasons. The discussions have become my saviour when just having a bad day. Topics that are covered can vary from makeup, beauty, fashion, weight loss, motivation, inspiration, and anxiety etc… you just have to listen to others to realise that your not the only one having a crappy day! I think that’s why I enjoy it so much, because its actually reality. Not the fake filtered kind, but real genuine people letting you into their lives in a few quick snaps.

So if you are considering joining or are already on it but don’t know who or how to add people take a look below. And if you’re not on snapchat, you’re missing out, its great craic!

Anyways enough of the waffling on….below I’ll give you a few of my favourites that I follow and I apologise in advance for your future addiction! By the way make sure to add myself @makeupbylisa and Lisa M @lisabeth-86 on snapchat to get a peek inside our makeup and beauty life!

The Pippa Palette

image

Hey everyone, Lisa D here. I hope you are all having a fab day so far and planning up a storm for the coming weekend!

So as some of you may be aware I have been flaunting this palette all over snap chat recently with various looks and swatches etc… (btw how addictive is snap chat!!). Anyhow… It has become my go to product since its launch in July by the beautiful Pippa O’Connor and Blank Canvas Cosmetics. So bravo to this duo as it has become a very popular palette indeed and for all the right reasons.

When I first heard Pippa (who I think is totally amazing, girl crush anyone!) was launching a palette, I was a bit sceptical of how this would work, but like many others was dying to give it a go!

image

The packaging is a very stylish pink cardboard palette which contains 6 matte eyeshadows, highlighter, blush and contour. It also contains a mirror inside which is reasonably sized for handy application, which is why this would make a good travel companion! The quality of these eyeshadows were surprisingly good, yes there is a small bit of fallout but nothing a quick swipe away won’t fix. What’s unique about this palette is that Pippa named each shade after her nearest and dearest which I think is rather cute…. aaahhh!  My favourite eyeshadow has to be Tobi. It just makes a perfect transition colour or primary colour on the eye, add a flick of liner and a lash of mascara and tadahh your fabulous! These shadows are so versatile with shades that can transform your look from day to night in one palette.

image

The blush is a beautiful peachy/pinky shade that works really well on pale to mid-tone skin types. The contour is just divine. I use it the majority of the time on clients. I find the shade is just perfect and doesn’t contain that orange hue that some contours have, Amour just ticks all the right boxes for me.

Now ladies…..behold your eyes when opening this palette as LuLu might blind you!! This highlighter got me feeling all sorts of excitement when I swatched it first. Do you know that saying “the bright light at the end of the tunnel”? Well that’s me when I use this!! It’s just amazing and is up there with the best of them, I can not rave about this enough. Used in the correct areas : temples, cheekbones, T-Zone and cupids bow you will be stopping all kinds of traffic!

image

Overall I think this product deserves a spot in any ladies or gents makeup bag, I know I will definitely be giving it a place in my kit. The price tag is €39.99 and for some it might seem a bit pricey. But let’s recap what your gaining for your money: 6 matte eyeshadows, highlighter, blush and contour in one decent sized palette……for me its a no brainer!

We hope you find this review helpful for deciding if the Pippa palette is for you, but I’m fairly confident you won’t be dissapointed.

A little bit about us…

image

Hi everyone,

Welcome to our very first blog post, we are delighted to have you here!

First things first, let us introduce ourselves, tell you a bit about who we are and what we do. We are both freelance makeup artists based in Leinster, both total makeup junkies and passionate about our work. We’re not afraid to admit we’re pretty much obsessed!! As you may have guessed we’re both called Lisa, things could get a little confusing around here so we will be calling ourselves Lisa D and Lisa M. So original, we know…

We have many years experience working as professional makeup artists after both qualifying in 2009/2010. Lisa D trained with the renowned Zoe Clark Makeup School, tutored by Zoe herself, while Lisa M studied with both ITEC and CIBTAC tutored by Niamh Martin, founder of the fabulous Nima Brush. Being makeup artists our work and jobs vary week to week. From makeup counter work to magazine shoots, fashion shows to bridal makeup , we have done it all. One of the great things about this job is no two jobs are ever the same, but one thing’s for sure……..they’re always great fun!!

The idea of starting a blog is one we have both been playing around with for a long time, both thinking it was something we would like to do. People have often said they like our content on our social media profiles and would love to see more of the same on a blog. With neither of us being sure about starting on our own, after a few long coffee (I mean cake really!!) dates we decided to take the plunge together and Lisas’Livin’Pretty was born. We spend a lot of time together through either work or makeup masterclasses etc. and we realised we talk a LOT about all things makeup and beauty. We have a lot to say on the matter!! So instead of us just chattering on like we always do we are gonna blog our way through day to day life working as a makeup artist. You can expect new blog posts every Monday and Thursday. We will have tutorials, product and treatment reviews and lots of tips and info for all the beauty junkies, with some lifestyle bits and bobs thrown in too. As it is we get so many mails and enquiries from people looking for advice on products and makeup techniques so this blog will be where we will be sharing all our knowledge and views. You can count on our reviews being honest too, we’re just two normal girls so we will be keeping it real!!

So thanks again for stopping by and joining us on our new venture. We’re only learning the ropes of the blogosphere, so tell us if there’s anything in particular you’d like to see on here. Until next time……

Live Pretty.
